Too Faced Lip Injection Color Bomb review and swatches of Bee Sting

Too Faced Lip Injection Color Bomb review and swatches of Bee Sting
Among the plethora of palettes and lipsticks I picked up in December was the Too Faced A Few Of My Favourite Things makeup palette, reviewed here and much-loved by me. This came with a mascara - Too Faced Lash Injection - and a plumping lip tint, the Too Faced Lip Injection Color Bomb Moisture Plumping Tint in Bee Sting. Too Faced was one of the first brands to come out with a lip plumper. I am not a fan of lip gloss or sheer tints and give all of them away unopened. But this is Too Faced, a brand I love more than all others except for theBalm and Benefit, so I decided to try it out. Moral of story: If you make up your mind not to try out lip glosses and tints, STICK to your decision.

Here is my review and the swatches Too Faced Lip Injection Color Bomb in Bee Sting.

This was where I fell, lock, stock and barrel. The cute pale pink tube with the deep gold cap had me from the word go.

Formula and pigmentation of Too Faced Lip Injection Color Bomb

The colour is on the sheerer side. The formula is paraben-free and cruelty-free. This is supposed to contain vitamins C and E and moisturising butters. The texture is creamy and glossy. The product is supposed to plump up your lips by 20% though my lips are big enough not to need plumping of any kind.

I have no idea about the staying power of this thing. I love experimenting but there are certain things I will not do for this blog and endangering my own health is one of them. Read on to find out more.

Swatches of Too Faced Lip Injection Color Bomb in Bee Sting

Here's a swatch on my forearm, two swipes. Bee Sting is a sheer pale pink.

Within minutes of swatching this product, or applying it on my lips, my skin burns - not tingles - like mad and my skin also begins to itch - think pins and needles combined with burning. This isn't confined to the swatch area alone but spreads through my forearm and there is some trauma, as you can see below. Too Faced says tingling and a temporary redness may occur, which will subside within 10 minutes. But this is severe burning and itching, and even after washing off the product, the skin remains tender and pink for a while until I apply aloe vera gel or some emollient and give it a good rest. The same is the story of my lips, which is why I am not showing you lip swatches for this. Incidentally, this is very similar to the way my mouth reacts when I take sulpha drugs, to which I've been confirmed allergic.

I admit to inheriting several food, drug and skin allergies (Thanks, Mum!) and to having oily, breakout-prone skin, but my skin isn't as sensitive as all that; it can tolerate rough handling. The picture below is some 20 minutes later, after a douse in cool water and a rub with The Body Shop Shea Whip lotion, which is why the skin isn't as angry as in the picture above. I won't be using this tint again.

Bottom Line
It is a mercy the product came along with the palette and I didn't go pay for it - and that I love the Too Faced palette so much. There are people who love this product, but I googled Too Faced Lip Injection skin sensitive and found Isabella of Musings of a Muse had exactly the same experience I did, so I am not alone. Read the comments on her review to find more people with similar stories of burning and skin trauma. Try this product with extreme caution.

    1. The burning and redness subsided by the end of the day but it wasn't pleasant when it lasted :(

  2. Ouch. That's terrible :(
I have tried lip plumpers before (Smashbox, MAC, Sally Hansen) and they all give varying degrees of tingling sensation, which I like. The reaction that you got is worse than an actual bee sting.

    1. I have Soap and Glory's Sexy Motherpucker which I love and have reviewed here, and it doesn't affect me one bit.

  3. I don't know about the too faced one but I know some lip plumpers do actually contain bee venom for the plumping. I'm allergic to bee stings and your reaction sounds like mine (though mine then does develop into a rather serious lack of breathing haha) so maybe that's why? If so they really should advertise it properly.

    1. OMG your reaction sounds terrible. I know ant and mosquito bites inflame my skin though I haven't been stung by a bee in years. I've tried a couple of other plumpers which were alright. You're right, they need an allergy disclaimer and more transparency with labels.

    1. Not all of them do - Soap and Glory's gives a pleasant tingle that I actually enjoy feeling! There's something off about this one.

  6. Renu the word 'injection' should have kept you away from this product!!!!
You should share this on their FB page too - I think even if 5% of the population has a reaction like this they should take away this product - other people who don't have an initial reaction are still ingesting something harmful that this product has for sure!

    1. Rofl! I'm weird enough to like having injections (except in my mouth) and got quite a few unnecessary vaccinations such as Yellow Fever in addition to the mandatory meningitis one before uni! Jokes apart, the Lash Injection mascara is very good... and yes, I have tagged their page. Quite a few people seem to be unable to get along with this product.

  7. The exact same thing happened to me! My arm looked like it had a chemical burn on it where I swatched and my lips hurt so badly for hours. I had to ice them and they throbbed all day. It was horrible. I was so surprised because I never had that experience with Lip Venom or any other product like this. I actually ENJOY the Lip Venom tingle while others say it's too much for them. That's how much the TF one hurt. I'm totally floored that it's a TF product because they're usually so amazing. I've seen quite a few people say that this happened to them =\

    1. Oh! I've been reading your blog post and the words, "searing, burning pain" hit the nail on the head - that is EXACTLY how I felt! And yes, I love Too Faced lipsticks, mascara and eyeshadows and primer so it is a bit surprising. I expected it to tingle as much as Soap and Glory's Sexy Motherpucker which makes me feel good, but this was agony.

  8. Yikes. So sorry you had a bad reaction, sweetie. :( Yup, those plumpers are something of a crapshoot. The manufacturers use a variety of different ingredients, the prime purpose of course, is to inflame the living tissue. I've also had an unpleasant reaction to these products. Not all, but enough that I don't want to gamble.

    1. I'm staying away from anything with the word plump on them in future - except for Soap and Glory Sexy Motherpucker which I like (looks good on me + the name is worth it). Traumatising my skin on purpose is where I draw the line.
