Valentine's Day Lace Nail Art with Etude House

A handy kit for hassle-free lace nail art.

This Valentine's Day, I wanted to avoid the regular red and hearts for my manicure, and try something different. I've wanted to try out lace nail art for a while, and my first attempt, with cotton lace, was an unmitigated disaster involving little bits of fabric all over my black sweater.
I came across the Etude House Rose Flowering Nails kit on Jolse.com. There are two shade options, Watery Rose and Velvet Rose - I chose the latter. This set contains two nail polishes; a dusky pink and a deep maroonish red, and costs just $7.58. There are 20 bits of black fabric lace for the nails, in two designs. The kit seemed like a better idea than further experiments with lace from the sewing kit, so I gave it a try yesterday. At first glance, the lace in the kit seemed like adhesive wraps, but the fabric peels off from the glue. The lace is thicker and stiffer than I expected.

The Etude House nail polishes had surprisingly smooth formula and were opaque in one coat, but I applied two for this mani so I could press the lace down. The brush was wide and clean-up was easy. The polishes:

Both laces felt a tad stiff and starched.

I opted for the design below:

I picked the densest part of the lace for the accent nail. The kit is straightforward to use; you just apply two coats of the polish - it dries matte - and when the second coat is fresh, press the lace firmly on the nail. The lace cannot be filed off like nail wraps, so I trimmed the lace before I pressed it on the nails.

I had to work fast to get the lace to adhere to the nail before the polish dried, and even so, the polish bubbled a bit when I pressed the lace down. As it is, not all the edges of the lace lie flat.

I did not use topcoat because I loved the texture. The mani has survived two showers so far.
