Best of Beauty 2017: Favourite Lipsticks

 
Here's my penultimate post of the year (yes, there's one more left, and no, it isn't "Happy New Year", haha). This is the last installment of the Best of Beauty 2017 trilogy. It features my favourite lip products. Not just lipsticks - I've included my favourite bullet and liquid lipsticks, lip liners, toppers, balm, and glosses. Should probably have added a scrub - but nothing much wowed me this year, and it turns out that my favourite Lush Bubblegum breaks me out around my mouth. Pretty much all Lush products have been breaking me out badly - I wonder why!

Best of Beauty 2017: Makeup Favourites Part I

 
Mum took me shopping for clothes over Boxing Day, and it was an absolute riot, with crowds everywhere. Anyway, we compromised, with me buying mostly navy blue dresses, and a couple of greys, browns, greens, and maroons thrown in for good measure. I have no idea why I prefer sombre colours so much - it just won't go away.
I also managed to get my paws on the Beautylish Lucky Bag for 2018 - can't wait for it to arrive; stay tuned for my unboxing.

For those who don't celebrate Christmas, I wish you Happy Holidays!
This thing to the right is my Christmas tree this year. I know, there's silver tinsel overkill. I was aiming for a Slytherin effect!
I'm a little kid when it comes to Christmas prezzies; as excited about receiving, as I am about giving. Most of what I get are books, but this year, Mum has a different kind of present in store. Scroll down to find out what it is.

Best Beauty Products of 2017: Skincare Favourites

 
I spent the major part of the last weekend ruminating over my wardrobe - as everyone, from my Mum and Gran to my friends, keeps telling me, it is boh-ring, old-maidish, and predominantly black. So I went out hunting for new outfits and came home with two - both black.
Mum came to see for herself, and lost it. She has now taken matters into her own hands. Apparently, for her Christmas present for me, she's taking me shopping in the last week of the year (I forsee getting half my hair pulled out in the mad crowds), and will CHOOSE my outfits. I also forsee some rather colourful rows.
She is right, though. From the time I started dressing myself, I've been choosing outfits that actually make me seem older, not younger. My favourite kind is the classic-length shift dress, and I own a few dozen of these in BLACK alone. I can see why she wants to take drastic action, although there is no way I can explain why I gravitate towards the same kind of clothes so much.
Before the chaos due to erupt during the wardrobe-revamping process, let's get this year's Best of Beauty series out of the way. I've started with skincare; stay tuned for makeup posts!

Add Subtle Warmth and Glow To Your Face With By Terry Compact Expert Dual Powder

 
Anyone else here who cannot get the hang of Instagram contouring? I fail to master the sharp-sculpted-cheekbones-look at all levels. So in a rather clever display of "sour-grapes", I vote for a subtler look, a softer glow.
By Terry's Compact Expert Dual Powder offers just that; it comes in a demurely-packaged compact of two finely-milled powders. There are eight shades in the range, so you can choose from a blush-bronzer combination, a blush-highlighter combination, or a bronzer-highlighter combination. I prefer the last one.
This means that you only have TWO differently coloured powders to grapple with; just the two shades to figure out what goes where. Those multi-pan face palettes give me the heebie-jeebies, no matter how many face charts and instruction manuals the brands include. This one is a lot less daunting.

Makeup Revolution Chocolate Rose Gold Eye Palette Review, Swatches, Tutorial

 
You cannot go wrong with the Makeup Revolution Eyeshadow Palettes. They are superbly pigmented, perform really well, and are very affordable. Also, they are cruelty-free. I do wish a bunch of higher-end brands *cough Too Faced cough* would take a leaf from MUR's book and up their eyeshadow quality.
I have their Chocolate Rose Gold Eyeshadow Palette to show you today; this is a very close dupe of the Huda Beauty Textured Rose Gold Eyeshadow Palette. The difference, of course, is that while the MUR palette costs £8.99, Huda's is priced at £56.
Unfortunately, the palette was damaged in the post, and two of the eyeshadows needed putting back together with rubbing alcohol. Which explains why my specimen doesn't look as neat as it should.

GRWM: Easy Rose Gold Daytime Makeup Tutorial With Foil Eyeshadow

 
I did this quick and easy rose gold eye makeup look with foil eyeshadow - this was the first time I played with foil eyeshadows, and boy, AM I impressed! They are so creamy, glide on so well, and are easily blendable. Not to mention how opaque they are, and how they last even without primer. The only problem is that you may have to use your fingertips to pat or glide them on, rather than a brush. Or maybe a very stiff-bristle brush could do the job; since I've gone out of my way to buy only soft-bristle brushes, I cannot prove this theory.
You can wear this look to daytime parties over the Holiday season; it's just about subtle enough!

Beauty Products Used Up in November 2017

 
How are you coming on with your Holiday shopping? Mine is all done, and I even did my wrapping over the weekend, which is the part I hate the most. Now to get out the tree and decorations.
Thanks to a bad anaphylactic reaction which landed me in hospital in late October, I haven't used up too many products in November - just very essential skincare; no retinols, far milder Vitamin C than the 30% I'm used to, no facial oil... you get the picture.

Fall Makeup Giveaway 2017 Results

 
I'm sorry for the delay in announcing the results of the Fall Beauty Giveaway 2017. For one, my 2014 MacBook Pro conked off and needed replacing; I now have a "touch-bar" model with the new USB-C ports, so everything needs an adaptor to hook up to the computer. Ugh. There was a time when the toothbrush was the height of innovation....
For another, I'm still recovering from a severe anaphylactic reaction which saw me in hospital for a week from October 23. Six different antihistamines a day are no joke. 
Anyway, results are right below.

Is The Harrods Beauty Advent Calendar 2017 Worth It? Unboxing, Review, Cost-Breakdown

 
The Harrods Beauty Advent Calendar for 2017 was probably the most widely-awaited beauty advent calendar for Holiday 2017. However, they probably had limited quantities, or underestimated the popularity - it sold out online for the first time in 11 minutes flat! It was restocked online by popular demand at least three more times after that, and sold out each time. This, despite a price-tag of £250!
Harrods was once my absolute favourite store (now it's tied with Harvey Nicks), so I decided that something had to give after I landed in hospital with an anaphylactic reaction. Even so, it sold out online by the time I realised it had launched. I got mine thanks to the lovely Harrods SAs who called me at home to take my order, from the in-store stock.
The ownership may have changed, as also the atmosphere - then-owner Mr Al Fayed himself was standing at the entrance greeting people (including a wide-eyed yours truly) on my first visit, and it is now a lot more blingy and impersonal in the store - BUT their customer care has clearly not changed.

LookFantastic's Beauty Box for November 2017 is themed Ready, Set, Glam. The box is a beautiful midnight blue, with stars - very reminiscent of LookFantastic's Beauty in Wonderland Advent Calendar for 2017 (unboxing here).
The box includes the usual Elle UK magazine for the month; this time, there are a couple of perfume samplers along with the magazine.

Feelunique's Beauty Advent Calendar for Holiday 2017 is themed "The Season To Shine". It costs £35, contains 12 beauty products, of which six are full-sized, and ships worldwide. Five products in here are makeup, three skincare, three hair care, and the one bath and body product.
The packaging is very pretty, though I had some difficulties getting the products out.

Every year, Selfridges does a luxury beauty advent calendar, featuring high-end brands from the L'Oreal group, as well as a more affordable multi-brand advent calendar. The latter used to be called the Beauty Workshop Advent Calendar, though over the last couple of years, Selfridges merely names it the Beauty Advent Calendar.
This year's edition costs £70, and contains 24 products, totally worth £250.

LookFantastic Advent Calendar 2017 Unboxing, GOOF-UP, Comparisons + Review

 
The reason my unboxing of the LookFantastic Beauty in Wonderland Advent Calendar for Holiday 2017 is at least three weeks later than expected is that I was hospitalised with an acute anaphylactic reaction - to goodness knows what; we can only do an allergy test after all the medications stop. This was on top of a foot injury. Basically, I woke up one morning with severe urticaria and couldn't move half my joints including my neck, and I ended up being pumped with steroids, which in turn gave me bad acne. I missed my Mum's birthday on October 27, while in hospital. That's what I call bad luck.
But the contents of the LookFantastic Beauty Advent Calendar for 2017 - and the packaging - are absolute, 100% good luck. Apart from one freak goof-up, this calendar is the best I've seen so far this year, as you will see below. I also want to show you the amazing attention to detail they've paid to the packaging.

Cult Beauty's Best of 2017 Goody Bag is here, and boy, IS it epic, with a whopping SEVEN full-sized products, including goodies from Huda Beauty, Tata Harper, The Ordinary, and so on? And, among those full-sized goodies is a whole palette and a liquid lippie. Some of the products included are very recent launches such as the Huda Beauty primer. I call it their best beauty bag of the year.
Instead of the usual makeup pouch, they've added a swanky train case, and the total worth of the contents is £300. Of the 18 products in this set, eight are makeup, eight are skincare, one is the train case, and one is a code for £15 off your next order. Very nice curation there.

Beauty Products Used Up in October 2017

 
I've had a nightmarish last few days - while already nursing a foot injury, I woke one fine morning to an acute allergic reaction to the point of severe anaphylaxis. Apart from bad urticaria and joint inflammation, I couldn't move my neck/head at all, and landed in the ER. They pumped me with 'roids and antihistamines, and the former have broken me out, but as my doctors said, it was a question of priorities. I'll have to navigate my skin through bad acne all over again (long-term readers will remember I battled it for the major part of 2016, and am currently undergoing scar revision). Boo!
And, we don't even know exactly what caused the anaphylaxis - they'll do an allergy test after three weeks of no meds and no hives. They suspected a peanut allergy, but it turns out it wasn't one after all. Good. I adore chilli-and-lime peanuts.
Enough whining. Let me show you the beauty products I used up in October 2017, and what I thought about each one.

Molton Brown Beauty Advent Calendar for Holiday 2017: Ships Worldwide

 
Remember I told you about the fabulous Molton Brown Advent Calendar here last year? They have one for Holiday 2017 as well, containing 24 products, themed "The Cabinet of Scented Luxuries". The cost is a bit steeper this year, at £165.
The packaging is very similar, and the contents are as luxurious as always. Molton Brown makes THE BEST body washes ever, Pink Pepperpod being my favourite, followed by Coco and Sandalwood. This is a very exciting beauty box. LookFantastic has collaborated with Hungarian skincare brand Omorovicza to bring out an exclusive, luxurious beauty box this Autumn. The box is worth £209.30, and costs £79. It contains six products, of which three are full-sized.
I'm a huge fan of the Omorovicza Thermal Cleansing Balm - my favourite balm cleanser - and the incredibly luxurious and refreshing Queen of Hungary Mist (they should make this a perfume and sell it. Mmmmmm!), so I'm very excited about this box. The price point of Omorovicza products is the one thing I'm not a fan of, so this box means we can get a few goodies at a bargain price!

FeelUnique The Season To Shine Beauty Advent Calendar 2017 Spoilers, Contents: Ships Worldwide

 
Every year, the FeelUnique 12 Days of Beauty Advent Calendar features on my Holiday shopping list. Here's what I got in my calendar for 2016, and here is my 2015 calendar.
The calendar costs just £35, and contains 12 products, of which a very generous six are full-sized. For the last two years, they've had a very interesting "star" product, which has ranged from a full-sized eyeshadow palette, to a full-sized lipstick. This year, the star product is indeed a full-sized eyeshadow palette.

Charlotte Tilbury's Advent Calendar for Holiday 2017 is here, and it is themed the "Naughty and Nice Magic Box." The 2016 calendar from Charlotte Tilbury looked like this. And, here's my review of the 2015 Charlotte Tilbury Book of Makeup Magic Advent Calendar.
The 2017 Advent Calendar costs £150 - like the two previous editions - and contains 12 products. But are the contents truly different? Or is this calendar not worth it? Read on.
